October 25 - November 1, 2007

Following our "Apples and Pumpkins" theme, the children played with "pumpkin guts", pumpkin seeds and then helped us carve the pumpkin.

On October 25 and November 1, the children learned that "God is Good" through the story of Abraham and Sarah. In this craft, children coloured pictures of Abraham with baby Isaac and then gave him a cotton ball beard and hair.

October 11, 2007

Last week was the first week of our new playroom theme, "Apples and Pumpkins". The youngest ones especially enjoyed playing in the orange jello in the sensory bin (although their faces reveal that they did more than just play in it!)

We also finished up the "Only God is Big" theme (see previous post). Here are some examples of our first finger painting craft at the playschool. In case you're not quite sure what these works of art represent, the children were painting the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil or an apple tree, whichever they preferred. I think the blue one is actually upside down in the picture...

We would have actually taken pictures of the kids as they painted, but it was "all hands on deck", especially with the younger ones who wanted to taste the paint as they worked on their creations!

September 20- October 4, 2007

Over the past few weeks, the children have been learning that "God Made Everything", through the story of Creation (Genesis 1 & Psalm 139: 13-16) and that "Only God is Big" though the story of Sin in the Garden (Genesis 3). Their memory verse for these weeks has been Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"

We've also been teaching that God made us all special and unique and knew us even before we were born.

Our crafts for the first two weeks focussed on these themes, through tracing and cutting out the children's handprints for our display and by having them colour things that God created with white crayons on white paper and then watching them appear when painted with black paint! Before Thanksgiving, we had children think of what they were thankful for and then helped them print these on the colourful paper tail feathers of their turkeys :)

Our playroom theme has been "Fall" so the sensory bin has been filled with soil & little plastic critters (which God created!) and fallen leaves.

Our "Picnic"

We didn't have the best weather for our picnic. There wasn't just drizzle...we had thunder and lightning!! Because the weather that week had been soooo unpredictable, we planned for an indoor picnic at the church. The kids played with sidewalk chalk (on our paper "sidewalk"), bubbles, water table, tricycles, slide, tunnels and ball tents. We painted faces, ate hot dogs, cheezies & apples, and spent time singing praises to our God and Saviour. As we heard the thunder and rain, we sang about how BIG our God is. How perfect!

Worshipping

Each week, we spend time worshipping with the children. Although they are too young to understand what it means to truly worship God, we are teaching them to sing with their mouths and their hearts to the one true God. We sing songs that reflect the majesty and attributes of God so that one day when they are singing, they will be able to truly worship.

Crossing the Red Sea

A few weeks ago the children learned that "God Always Wins" through the story of Pharoh, Moses & the Israelites. To reinforce the story and Biblical truth, we made the kids their very own Red Sea. Although they had fun walking on the sand & looking through the little window, I think we had just as much fun making it!

Special times

Because the playschool is co-operative, parents serve as "duty-parents" or teaching assistants on a rotational basis. It's a time when parents can truly focus on their child or children.

Crafting...Using Our Hands

Making snowflakes with shaving cream & glue with sparkles may be a little messy, but it sure is FUN!

A work of art.
Stickers are to put on our hand-made drums AND noses.

Large Motor Area...Using Our Muscles!

In our large motor area, kids can crawl through tunnels, ride on tricycles, throw bean bags into hoops or bins, or play in our ball tent.

Dressing Up... Using our Imaginations!

Dressing up is fun! Kids can be a princess, a tricycle-riding police officer or a "fire mouse".... or whatever they want to be! We're always looking for new costumes & dress-up clothes. Let us know if you have any to donate. We'll gladly come pick them up.

Sensory Bin

Kids LOVE to explore new textures with their hands. The sensory bin allows them the opportunity to play in jello, sand, water, ice, cotton-balls or whatever we dream up for them!
